Both trommel screen and vibrating screen are widely used screening equipment, but the difference in working methods and principles also means the difference in output and the types of materials suitable for screening. This article analyzes the difference between trommel screen and vibrating screen from the following 7 aspects.
1. Different screening methods
The trommel screen uses a rolling screening method. During the screening process, the equipment will not vibrate. The motor and reducer drive the drum to rotate through the bearing, and the material passes through the screen from high to low due to the rotation of the drum and is successfully filtered out.
The vibrating screen is screened using the exciting force generated by the vibrating motor. The commonly used mine vibrating screens include circular vibrating screens and linear vibrating screens.
2. Different structure and shape
Trommel screen
The trommel screen is a cylinder, and the outer surface of the cylinder uses one or more layers or several sections of the screen to increase the screening specification. The trommel screen is generally large in size, mainly composed of motor, reducer, roller device, screen mesh, frame, sealing cover, and inlet and outlet. A steel ring must be added to the drum device to prevent the drum screen from deforming.
The vibrating screen is mainly composed of screen box, screen frame, screen mesh, vibrating motor, motor base, vibration damping spring, and bracket.

3. Different working principle
Trommel screen
The drum device is installed on the frame at an inclined Angle. The motor is connected with the drum unit through a coupling through the reducer and drives the drum unit to rotate around its axis. When the material enters the drum unit, due to the tilt and rotation of the drum unit, the materials on the screen are turned and rolled. Qualified materials are discharged through the discharge port at the bottom of the back end of the drum, while unqualified materials are discharged through the discharge port at the end of the drum.
Circular vibrating screen
The screen surface is fixed on the screen box, which is suspended or supported by a spring. The bearing of the spindle is mounted on the screen box and rotates at high speed by a belt wheel. The eccentric plate is installed on the main shaft, which generates centrifugal inertia force with the rotation of the main shaft, so that the vibration of the screen box is the approximately circular track.
Linear vibrating screen
The vibrating motor as a vibration source, which causes the material to be thrown on the screen while moving forward in a straight line. The material enters the feeding port of the screen machine evenly from the feeder and produces several kinds of upper and lower contents of the sieve through the multi-layer sieve screen, which are discharged from the outlet respectively.
4. Different classification
The drum screen can be divided into single-layer, double-layer, and three-layer vibrating screen. According to the drum screen, motor and bearing connection can be divided into shaft drum screen and no shaft drum screen.

5. Different processing capacity and applicable field
The drum screen has the large output and long service life, so it is suitable for large output.
Linear vibrating screen production is small, suitable for screening fine specifications of materials.

The trommel screen is not as accurate as of the vibrating screen.
Vibrating screen uses vibration motor as vibration source, high screening accuracy.
7. Different plugging situation
Trommel screen
The material in the drum turn, roll, so that the material stuck in the screen hole can be ejected, to prevent the screen hole blocked.
Circular vibrating screen
The material moves in a circular parabolic trajectory on the screen surface to disperse the material as much as possible so as to improve the material’s jumping power. Moreover, the material stuck in the screen hole can also jump out, reducing the phenomenon of hole blocking.
